The Leadership problem

Typically, Leaders in our organisations and our businesses are not actually leading anyone. They have no followers and the Leadership problem is that they don’t even know it.

We know this because we share that problem – the problem of being focussed on ourselves rather than on others and on achieving results, is a universal (human) problem.

The Leadership problem becomes obvious in our interactions with others. When we become frustrated with our people, when we want our employees to change, or the boss to change. Notice that the preferred solution in each case here is for others to change.

Before we can expect others to change, we must first change. We must become the Leader that is capable of leading that change in others.

Leadership defined

Leadership is about understanding, caring for and valuing others, while focusing on, engaging with and awakening others to their potential. For it is through others that we become Leaders.

Leadership is co-creating a vision for others to follow, co-creating shared set of values that keep us all on track. Leadership is about empowering our people to achieve the results needed for our vision to be brought into reality.

Leadership is also much, much more than this.

Managing is not Leading. Management is about ensuring that our people have the correct systems, processes and tools. Managing is about planning and implementation. Leadership is not Management. They are different.
