City North News reporter LAURA STEAD takes a long, hard look at herself through the eyes of a life coach
WHAT is it about taking stock of your own life that is so intimidating? Whatever the answer, I'm going to have to cast those thoughts aside because in a few minutes I'll be meeting a woman who wants me to do just that. The session is organised by speed dating agency Fast Impressions, which is currently offering free life coaching trial sessions to their clients through national company The Coaching Room.
When I meet my coach Tammy Somerwil it's with a healthy dose of apprehension. This was partly due to the fact I like to think I have it all figured out in my take-itas-it-comes approach to life, but mostly because my dealings with the psychological were limited to watching an occasional episode of Dr Phil. However, Tammy suggests I take full advantage of the session and to do that we need to talk through an aspect of my life I think could use improvement.
As a certified life coach, Tammy tells me she's also trained in coaching and neuro-linguistic programming. This, from what I can ascertain, has to do with the study of excellence, and what it takes to achieve it. Somewhat more at ease, I decide as long as her advice doesn't lead me to do anything crazy, like give up coffee, the friendship could continue.
She asks me what I want to achieve, and we work on a series of visual and mental exercises aimed at inspiring me to achieve it. Apparently, our brains have a system of distorting, deleting and placing value judgments on the information coming in which, needless to say, doesn't bode well for the psyche. My task is to turn the negatives into positives and to see new possibilities in what I thought was impossible.
It's with this knowledge, and the empowerment to take charge of my life, that Tammy and I part ways.
Feeling inspired, I head back to my desk thinking "this is where it all begins ... right after I make myself a cup of coffee".
